Goodbye....
Farewell....
Auf Wiedersehn....
Adieu....
One of my all time FAVE councils here in Melbourne has CEASED it's bi-annual hard waste collection service....**sigh**....I've SHOPPED the hard rubbish in this area for 12 years....Yep....TWENTYFOUR individual collections I've been out there very active in my role as KEEPER OF THE PAST....Picking up the forlorn & forgotten Treasures....Passing them on to others who appreciate the whispers of the past as much as I do....
Now residents within this council have the option of calling the council directly twice a year to have their household goods collected....When the goods are collected now they will be CRUSHED & go into landfill without someone like myself coming along & saving pieces....!!!!!
I hope everyone's having a GREAT week....!!
Cheers for now,
Tamarah :o)
I think most councils are doing the same...such a waste, people LOVE hard rubbish, some people like the copper men and the scrap metal and the likes of yourself that harvest all those unwanted treasures....just such a waste....
ReplyDeleteOh that's too bad. We never had pick up here. I hear you can get the best stuff at those pick ups:)

That is sad. To think of what you could save and keep out of the landfill. Maybe one day they will reconsider. Have a great day!

Oh no!! How awful!! Don't they realize the power of recycling!!

Such a shame. Not only for you, but for all those that might benefit from others' castoffs. Is there a donation location in your neck o'the woods or does everything just go in the trash?
ReplyDeleteDeb
P.S. I promise you up and down you're gonna find tons in Texas! See you soon!
Don't you love the efficiency of those in charge sometimes?! I hope you can convince them that there is merit to having people like you find a home for these items rather than having them end up as trash.

My city has the free "clean up" and you should SEE ALL THE PEOPLE that come to Pick up! It's amazing! I must confess that I also do a little shopping even tho hubby isn't a fan of me doing it.. LOL! Maybe if MANY folks call and say they want it, they could change their minds!
ReplyDeleteDeb
The same thing happened to us! We use to have "bulk" trash day twice a year. On those days, I would drive past each persons home looking for their trash, and my treasures...Unfortunately this is no longer the way they are doing things, we too have to call up for our bulk days on individual basis. sigh.
ReplyDeleteOurs has changed to three times a year you can put out three pieces so there is never a hunt like before. Such a shame.!
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame. Think of all the treasures that will be thrown out and not rescued!

Oh dear, that is simply terrible news. My sister rides around her neighborhood on Wednesday night and picks up junk off the curb. I taught her well. Proud I am.
ReplyDeleteOh so sad...that is not good news at all. Maybe you can sneak in before they crush everything!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad, so many people benefit form council clean ups. You're right it just seems to wasteful to crush all that stuff. xx
ReplyDeleteaww, you must go to work as a truck driver and be the home pick up person
ReplyDeleteLezlee
Our council did that last year, such a shame.
ReplyDeleteA real bummer Tamarah~~~
ReplyDeleteps..have you tried the dye yet??
pps..hubby took me to glen waverley antique place last sunday & i got lots of fab crochet cloths..
xx me
That seems like such a short-sighted decision! They wouldn't have to dispose of nearly as much if they'd just let people take things they want first.
ReplyDeleteBummer.
So devastated that councils are rolling this new system out. All those treasures that are going to go to waste in landfill is just so disappointing. Funny how Carbon tax is an issue yet adding to landfill isn't!
ReplyDeleteOh I feel for you my hero-of-the-hard-rubbish.

Just saw your last post, (yes, I am waaaaay behind on blog reading), and adore the painting. To think things like that will be going away without a chance to be rescued - so sad!

It is almost as if some councils actually WANT to go backwards. I cannot understand the thinking behind this. Have you thought about writing letters and attending your next Council Meeting? We saved our Town Hall years ago from being a carpark. Now it is our Gallery. People Power can be amazing. The benefits of these hard rubbish collections are so huge for so many. Please dont give up! sue

ReplyDeleteNooooooooooo! What a WASTE! petition, petition, petition!
ReplyDeleteThis is a horrible tragedy. Is there any way to get your hands on any of that great stuff they will be throwing away????

Thank you for posting this. It’s exactly what I was looking for!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog. I’m a lifelong antiquer, and am making my passion for antiques a full-time business by selling antiques online. I’m blogging about my experiences at my brand-new blog, Wisdom Lane Antiques: wisdomlaneantiques.blogspot.com. Stop by!
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of the days before recycling. Is this their way of making more money? Start a swap meet in your town, something, to help preserve treasures! Our landfill is county property, and a crime to pick from it. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad that it's all crushed. There could be some really great stuff that people are throwing out. What is garbage to one person is treasure to another.
